Track season set to start at Washington Park Velodrome
Track season set to start at Washington Park Velodrome

Update on 5/22/17 – The velodrome is repaired and we are waiting for a few warm nights before the lines are painted. At this time is is unsure when the track will be completed. Please check Facebook, kenoshavelodrome.com or WCA website for details.

After being under construction for two years, the Washington Park Velodrome in Kenosha, Wisconsin is ready to roll.  With 2017 marking the velodrome’s 90th anniversary, the cycling season is packed with exciting events.

In 2015 with the track asphalt surface crumbing, the City of Kenosha allocated $650,000 to reconstructed the “bowl”. This time the surface was switched from asphalt to concrete and the banking increased from 23 degrees to 28 degrees in the corners. This will make the velodrome safer and faster.

The 2017 season starts out with three scheduled training clinics, Saturday, May 6th, Saturday, May 13th and a women’s only clinic on Sunday, May 21st. Learn how to ride the track from Kenosha’s most experienced track racers from 12:00-3:00pm.  Come to one or come to all, for only $10 each, it’s a perfect way to learn how to ride the track or perfect your bike handling skills. There will be limited track bikes available. Make sure to bring your pedals, helmet and water.

Tuesday, May 16th is when the real action starts, registration opens at 6:00pm with the racing getting under way at 7:00pm. The 16 week USAC series will offer riders who are divided into age and ability categories the chance to race three races each Tuesday evening.  The season will conclude on August 29th.  Entrance fees are a low $20 for men and women category 1/2, 3 and 4, $15 for category 5 and juniors are a bargain price of $10.

June 6th is Ladies Night and it marks the first “big” race of the season. The night will highlight our women racers, competing for larger payouts sponsored by  Psimet and Yojimbo’s Garage.

The next week, June 13th, the Mayor’s Cup/State Points Race is the featured race for our category 1/2/3 racers. Not only will racers be racing for the trophy, this points race will also bring bigger payouts. We will crown the Wisconsin State Points Race Champion.

July 11th is the Juniors turn to take the spotlight, with the Bill Schulte Memorial Points Race. All juniors age 9-18 will race for the chance to take home the trophy. This race is not only filled with some of the fastest juniors in the area, it is also filled with cash and lots of primes.

The track season would not be complete without the grueling Bob Pfarr Memorial Classic, a 150 laps Points Race. This 30-mile race on August 15th is really a test of the racers endurance and mental toughness.

Throughout the season, there is a good mix of racing including sprints, endurance and even record setting events. To see all of the exciting action offered this summer, take a look at the official track flyer that is attached. Check out our web site www.kenoshavelodrome.com or facebook for more information or last minute cancellations (we don’t race in the rain).
